Do you find yourself overperforming and outperforming, yet still facing the weight of discrimination, invalidation, and racism?

If so, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to face this alone.

Why Somatic Coaching?

In environments where your excellence is often met with resistance, the stress can manifest deeply within your body.

This stress isn’t just in your mind—it’s in your muscles, your nerves, your very connective tissues.

Over time, this can lead to psychosomatic illnesses that are tough to diagnose and even tougher to treat.

That’s where somatic coaching comes in.

Leadership Somatic Coaching focuses on identifying and releasing the stress stored in your body before it turns into chronic, hard-to-treat conditions.

It’s about preventing burnout before it sidelines your ambitions.

Your Space Holder:

ALEXIS OVERSTREET, LCSW

I’m Alexis - a psychotherapist and body-based mental health coach. I use MELT, Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) and other skills to move stress, trauma, and overwhelm out of the body.

These are some of the tools that I learned to use over the pandemic as I experienced and worked with so much stress and trauma, and slowly, I just started incorporating techniques into a traditional therapy session. The results were pretty amazing and the life changing feedback I received from clients were truly...life changing.

Currently, I focus on private wellness offerings, corporate wellness programs, and school district wellness partnerships. One of my passions is to gift others with the power to heal their own bodies; I do this with mental health approaches to build body awareness and melt away stuck stress. Teaching about the healing of trauma, working with brain-body practices, and encouraging daily practices of self-care are my jams! It has been especially beautiful to witness the transformation from these practices in our post-pandemic world – where our bodies still carry the stress from that experience.

I look forward to supporting you through this work! Let’s get to burnin’ up the burnout!  ~Alexis.

FAQs

What is somatic coaching, and how does it differ from traditional therapy?

Somatic coaching focuses on the mind-body connection, helping you to identify and release stress stored in your body. While traditional therapy often focuses on emotional and psychological aspects, somatic coaching addresses how stress manifests physically, working to prevent burnout and improve overall well-being. It’s particularly effective for those who may feel the impact of stress in their body but struggle to manage it through talk therapy alone.

Who is this coaching program designed for?

This program is specifically designed for Black women in higher education, particularly those pursuing doctorate degrees, seeking tenure, or on track for leadership roles like provost. It’s tailored for those who have experienced high levels of stress due to overperforming in predominantly white institutions (PWIs) and have faced discrimination, invalidation, or racism in their academic environments.

How will somatic coaching help me manage stress and prevent burnout?

Somatic coaching helps you become aware of how stress is stored in your body and teaches you techniques to release that stress before it turns into chronic health issues. By addressing both the physical and mental aspects of stress, this coaching empowers you to sustain your energy, resilience, and overall well-being, reducing the risk of burnout and improving your ability to navigate demanding academic environments.

What is included in the Leadership Somatic Coaching program?

The program includes a comprehensive somatic assessment, three somatic intensives (which can be conducted in-person or virtually), a personalized burnout prevention and intervention plan, a cortisol level test, and specialized equipment for connective tissue work. Additionally, you’ll have access to direct messaging support with your coach between sessions for ongoing guidance.

Is this program a substitute for therapy or medical treatment?

No, Leadership Somatic Coaching is not a substitute for therapy or medical treatment. It is designed to complement these services by focusing on the body-based aspects of stress and burnout. If you are currently in therapy or under medical care, this program can work alongside those treatments to provide additional support.

How many coaching sessions are included, and how long do they last?

The program includes three intensive somatic coaching sessions. Each session typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your specific needs and goals.

Can the somatic intensives be conducted virtually, or do they need to be in person?

The somatic intensives can be conducted either in-person or virtually, depending on your location and preference. Both formats are designed to be equally effective in helping you release stress and restore balance in your body.

What kind of equipment is provided for connective tissue work?

You will receive specialized tools designed to support the release of tension in your connective tissues. These tools may include foam rollers, massage balls, or other items that you can use at home to maintain the progress you make during the coaching sessions.

What does the cortisol level test involve, and how will the results be used?

The cortisol level test measures the amount of cortisol—a hormone linked to stress—in your body. This test provides valuable insights into how stress is affecting your physical health. The results will be used to tailor your somatic care plan and ensure that the coaching addresses your specific stress levels effectively.

How quickly can I expect to see results from the coaching?

Many clients start to notice improvements in their stress levels and physical well-being after the first or second session. However, the exact timeline can vary depending on the individual. The coaching is designed to produce both immediate relief and long-term benefits, helping you to sustain your progress over time.

What kind of support will I receive between sessions?

You will have access to direct messaging with your coach between sessions. This allows you to ask questions, receive additional guidance, and stay connected throughout the coaching process, ensuring that you receive the support you need during critical moments.

Is this coaching program only for Black women in higher education, or is it open to others?

While the program is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of Black women in higher education, others who resonate with the challenges described may also benefit. If you feel that this program aligns with your experiences and needs, you’re welcome to inquire about enrollment.
